Introduction
The Ford Mustang is one of America’s most iconic and beloved vehicles. As Ford’s flagship model, the Mustang has evolved into an established benchmark to compare other vehicle’s performance-to-value ratio. For years, few vehicles have come close to matching the performance offerings the Mustang GT provides at the price point its at. Today, we look at Ford’s newest generation of the Mustang, the S650. In this blog post, we will cover its design, performance, and driving experience that truly separates itself from the pack.
Design
The S650 Mustang GT features aggressive styling cues with a muscular stance that captures attention on the road. The new generation introduces an updated headlight design and new front fascia, while refreshing the sleek styling of the S550. In my opinion, the exterior updates maintain the S550 presence with enough change to separate it from the previous generation.
Like the S550 older brother, the S650 is receiving controversial feedback on the exterior appearance. Some have compared it’s likeness to the Chevrolet Camaro mixed with the Honda Accord. While I can see where these comparisons are being drawn, I do see the potential for the aftermarket to enhance the appearance, similarly to what the aftermarket did to the S550.
With regards to the interior, the Mustang has taken a welcomed approach to the refresh. Ford has taken the interior and crafted it towards the driver. The gauges and display are all focused on the driver, creating a fighter jet-styled cockpit.
Overall, Ford has modernized the interior and exterior appearance of the S650 Mustang and improved its performance-to-value ratio. At a starting price of $42,495 for a GT model, the new Mustang GT upholds its reputation as a performance bargain.
Performance
Under the hood, the S650 Mustang GT packs a new generation Coyote V8, producing 486 horsepower and 418 ft.lb of torque. To live in a time where a base model Mustang GT makes almost 500 horsepower is a beautiful thing. The new engine has evolved from the first generation Coyote, optimizing its power delivery and fuel efficiency.
For the transmission options, the legendary 10-speed automatic and the classic 6 speed manual transmission are available for the GT. The 10-speed automatic is known for quick acceleration and creating a straight line monster. While the 6 speed is not the most popular option, its very cool to see a manual option for a 2024 vehicle. If you aren’t a fan of this 6 speed, the Dark Horse Mustang may be your preferred option so you can have access to the wonderful TREMEC manual transmission.
One of my favorite features of the new Coyote V8 is the dual intake setup. When you pop the hood, the dual intake setup is eye-catching and provides that potential for more power potential.
What is the Performance Pack and Why You need it
Ford’s performance pack option for the Mustang GT is absolutely necessary. Ford offers this package with HUGE Brembo brakes, a Torsen Differential with 3.73 gears for the manual transmission option, enhanced bracing, and exterior improvements with 19 inch wheels and black accents.
At a $4,995 price point, the overall package creates a true performance monster. The handling is greatly improved and provides a balanced driving experience. With the performance pack, the Mustang GT turns from a straight line muscle car to a nimble sports car capable of competing with cars such as the M3.
Ford’s emphasis of power in the S650 platform can be seen at the extreme with the 2025 Mustang GTD! Visit our article that discusses how Ford turned the S650 into an insane track car for the street.
Why This Mustang Matters
Unfortunately, the demands from governments worldwide for electric vehicles and stricter emissions are killing sports cars. Both GM and Dodge are moving their flagship cars towards electric powerplants. The new Dodge Charger is literally going to need a charger for its electric powerplant. Fortunately, Ford is keeping the American V8 alive. Not only are they sticking to their roots, but they are adamant about having affordable V8 Mustangs for years to come.
Conclusion
The new Ford Mustang S650 GT represents a remarkable evolution of the iconic pony car. With its captivating design, powerful performance, and driver-focused interior, the S650 GT is set to take the sports car market by storm. Whether you are a Mustang enthusiast or looking for an adrenaline rush producing machine, the Mustang GT is hard to pass up. Ford has hit the mark with this vehicle and I am very excited to see where the aftermarket goes with this vehicle.
