Our Choice For The Bargain Sports Cars Of 2026
When compiling this list, I think about what cars I would want to see modified on the road. A good comparison to me is what cars I think would take place in animes like Initial D or MF Ghost. The options are not solely limited to this list, but I believe these cars have the capabilities and the aftermarket to truly be a fantastic option for a new car enthusiast to build and enjoy on a daily basis.

1. Subaru WRX
Flat-four rumbles, all-wheel drive, and a rally-inspired chassis to whip around on a budget is nothing to scoff at! The Subaru WRX has been a staple in the North American tuner scene since it arrived in the early-2000’s. With its turbocharger, massive aftermarket, and devoted followers, the Subaru WRX is ready to set you up for automotive success.
My take is the newer 4th generation WRXs are setting up to be a future favorite! It has just enough tech, phenomenal aftermarket, and I think it looks great. Best of all, the 4th generation has depreciated nicely to where enthusiasts can obtain this with ease. If you’re curious how to modify it, visit our 4th gen WRX mod guide for ideas!

2. Nissan 350Z / Infiniti G35
Everyone remembers the classic Nissan 240sx. A lightweight, rear-wheel drive platform with a manual transmission just itching to slide around. It was so dirt cheap, they were practically given away. Nowadays, this same treatment is happening with the 350Z and Infiniti G35. Go on Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist and you can easily pick up one for $5,000.
The Z platform’s powerful VQ35 is a great base for a time attack or drift car. With its stunning body style and huge aftermarket, the 350Z and G35 will surely work great for your build. Personally, I look at these cars as the future go-to car for drifting, time attack, or even show cars.

3. Scion FR-S / Subaru BRZ / Toyota 86
Since its release in 2013, the 86 platform from Subaru and Toyota(Scion) has been a welcomed addition to the tuner world. Its driver-entric focus brings enthusiasts together for a fantastic experience. While the engine output is controversial to some, we look at it as one of the best low horsepower cars out there!
Auto shows like SEMA and Tokyo Auto Salon highlight this epic tuner car through creative builds ranging from OEM plus to complete custom projects. Due to the wonders of depreciation, this car is easily found in the $7,500 to $10,000 range.

4. Honda Civic Si
What is a bargain sports car list without the king of bargains: Honda! Honda Civic Si’s are often a new car enthusiasts first glimpse into the tuner scene. Nowadays, the main reason to get a used Civic Si is the mod-friendly K series engine. High revs, the love for more power, and tons of resources to build the K Series motor is a great reason to hop into a newer Civic Si.
We love our old school Hondas, but the newer tech and K series is incredibly fun. Plus, you aren’t dealing with the tax of old school JDM cars that we’re seeing across the board!
5. Hyundai Genesis Coupe
This is a personal favorite of mine. I love this car not because it is the best in one realm or another. I love it because it shows us what Hyundai could do if they wanted to make fun cars. From the Genesis Coupe, we saw the Veloster and Elantra N models hit the market and its been epic ever since. Unfortunately, the Genesis Coupe isn’t being made brand new anymore.
Fortunately, we have used models that are absolutely DIRT CHEAP for what you are getting. A rear-wheel drive coupe with V6 or Turbo 4 power? Sign me up. I’ve looked all over the market and I’m seeing decent running examples in the $5,000s. That is the pinnacle of a bargain sports car! The body screams modify and the exhaust sounds pretty solid as well! I wouldn’t be surprised if these start competing with 350Z’s in the budget drift car competition someday.

Don’t Let Automotive Fun Be Reserved For The Wealthy
Bargain sports cars absolutely have their place in the car world. It is the very fabric of how the tuner and hot rodding world began! Us middle-class folk only have so much money to go around, especially with transportation. That is why when I compiled this list, I looked at how the affordability of the car along with the parts for it would come into play.
While these cars are still more expensive than the used cars of my high school days (almost fifteen years ago, yikes), one can get into these cars and enjoy them to their fullest. The world of social media has made it seem like you can’t enjoy a car unless its a 1000+ horsepower Toyota Supra or a G80 BMW. That is far from the truth. Go out there and get behind the wheel of one of these cars, find an insane backroad, and experience the synchronization of human and machine.
